Masculine -ης Nouns

You met one -ης masculine in Module 4 (ο μαθητής); now meet the whole class. Masculine -ης nouns run: nom sg -ης, then acc/gen sg DROP the -ς to -η (ο φοιτητής → τον φοιτητή, του φοιτητή), plural nom/acc -ες (οι φοιτητές), gen pl -ών (των φοιτητών). The endings are the SAME as the -ας masculines (πατέρας → πατέρα) except the nominative keeps its -ης. Two stress patterns split the class. OXYTONE nouns - stressed on the ending - never move it: φοιτητής → φοιτητών, μαθητής → μαθητών (like αδελφός → αδελφών). PAROXYTONE nouns - stressed on the penult - pull the stress to the ending in the GENITIVE PLURAL only: ο εργάτης → των εργατών, ο ναύτης → των ναυτών, ο πελάτης → των πελατών. So spot the stress in the nominative: final stress = no shift; penult stress = the gen pl jumps to -ών.

The rule

Masculine -ης nouns decline like the -ας masculines except for the nominative: nom sg -ης, then the acc/gen singular drop the -ς to -η (ο φοιτητής → τον / του φοιτητή), plural -ες (οι φοιτητές), genitive plural -ών (των φοιτητών); the vocative singular is (ναύτη!). The only variable is the gen-pl stress. Oxytone nouns - end-stressed in the nominative - keep it there: φοιτητής → φοιτητών, μαθητής → μαθητών. Paroxytone nouns - penult-stressed - move it to the ending in the genitive plural: ο εργάτης → των εργατών, ο ναύτης → των ναυτών, ο πελάτης → των πελατών. Read the nominative stress and the gen pl follows: final stress → no shift, penult stress → the tonos jumps to -ών.
